Sommer-OL 1964 ble arrangert i Tokyo i Japan fra 10. til 24. oktober 1964. Dette var første gangen olympiske leker ble arrangert i Asia. Tokyo ble opprinnelig tildelt de olympiske sommerleker for 1940, men måtte 16. juli 1938 trekke seg som arrangør av lekene på grunn av den andre kinesisk-japanske krig. Lekene ble så tildelt Helsingfors, men ble senere avlyst på grunn av den andre verdenskrig.[2]

Dette var også første gang olympiske leker ble vist i farger på fjernsyn. Flere av konkurransene ble også filmet av den japanske filmskaperen Kon Ichikawa for dokumentarfilmen Tokyo Orinpikku (Tokyo-olympiaden).

Sør-Afrika ble utestengt fra deltakelse i olympiske leker av den internasjonale olympiske komité (IOK) på grunn av at landets apartheidlover tilsa at de kun ville sende hvite utøvere. Sør-Afrikas apartheidregime var årsaken til at landet ikke var tilbake som olympisk nasjon før i Sommer-OL 1992.[3] Nord-Korea og Indonesia boikottet lekene på grunn av at flere av deres friidrettsutøvere og skyttere var blitt utestengt av det internasjonale friidrettsforbundet og det internasjonale skyteforbundet.[4]

USA vant flest gullmedaljer med 36, mens Sovjetunionen vant flest medaljer totalt med 96. Ingen av de tjuefire norske utøverne vant medaljer. De deltok i seks idretter, fordelt på fire kvinner og tjue menn.

Valg av vertsby

Tokyo ble valgt ved avstemning under den internasjonale olympiske komités 56. sesjon i München i Vest-Tyskland 26. mai 1959.[5][6]
