Verein für Leibesübungen Bochum 1848 – Fußballgemeinschaft e.V. er en tysk sportsforening fra byen Bochum. Sportsforeningen ble grunnlagt i 1938 gjennom en sammenslåingen av eldre klubber, deriblant den allerede 90 år gamle Bochumer Turnverein 1848. Sportsforeningen har cirka 5 000 medlemmer hvorav 2 300 tilhører fotballavdelingen.
Utenom fotball finnes det avdelinger for følgende idretter: badminton, basketball, bordtennis, dans, fekting, håndball, hockey, friidrett, svømming, tennis, turn og volleyball.[trenger referanse]
Bundesliga (fotball)
VfL Bochum hadde en positiv utvikling gjennom 1960-tallet, noe som ble bekreftet med deltakelsen i finalen om DFB-pokalen 1968, der man tapte mot 1.FC Köln. I 1971 rykket laget for første gang opp til Bundesliga.[trenger referanse]
Laget forble der i de neste 20 år, dog med en åttendeplass som beste resultat (sesong 1978/79). VfL Bochum ble betegnet som grå mus og samtidig «ikke nedrykkbar». Største suksess i denne tiden var deltakelse i finalen om DFB-pokalen i 1988, der man tapte mot Eintracht Frankfurt.[trenger referanse]
Mellom 1993 og 1997 rykket laget for første og andre gang ned og opp mellom 1. og 2.Bundesliga. I sesongen 1997/98 ble Bochum femte og kvalifiserte seg dermed for første gang til UEFA-cupen og kom til åttendedelsfinalen.[trenger referanse]
I årene 1999 til 2002 kom ned og opprykk nr. 3 og 4. I 2004 klarte man igjen å ble 5. og kvalifiserte seg igjen til UEFA-cupen, men hadde ikke særlig hell der og neste sesong endte igjen med nedrykk og igjen direkte opprykk. Mellom 2006 og 2010 forble VFL i 1. Bundesliga, men kjempet hele tiden mot nedrykk som ble et faktum i mai 2010.[trenger referanse]
