Igor de Rachewiltz

Igor de Rachewiltz (født 11. april 1929 i Roma i Italia, død 30. juli 2016) var en ledende mongolog og sinolog som bodde og hadde sitt akademiske virke i Australia.

Liv og virke

Bakgrunn

Igor De Rachewiltz kom fra en polsk adelig familie med szlachtabakgrunn. Hans bestemor var tatar fra Kazan og skal ha nedstammet fra Den gylne horde.

Igor de Rachewiltz studerte jus i Roma, og fortsatte med studier i orientalske språk i Napoli. Tidlig i 1950-årene fikk han australsk studiestipend.

Sinologi, mongologi

Han tok doktorgrad i kinesisk historie ved Australian National University i Canberra i 1961. Hans doktorarbeid gjaldt Djengis Khans kinesiske sekretær, den lærde Yelü Chucai.

Hans akademiske virke har for det meste vært i Australia, men han har også forsket i Europa og fullførte prosjekter som mongologene Antoon Mostaert og Henri Serruys ikke rakk å sluttføre før de døde. Blant hans mange verker er en oversettelse i elleve bind av Mongolenes hemmelige historie – det skjedde i perioden 1971–1985. Arbeidet var påbegynt av pater Mostaert.

I 2007 donerte han sitt personlige bibliotek på rundt 6000 bind til Scheut Memorial Library ved Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Hans forskningsinteresser var Kinas og Mongolias politiske og kulturelle historie på 1200-tallet og 1300-tallet, politiske og kulturelle kontakter mellom øst og vest i samme periode, og sino-mongolsk filologi generelt.
