The green cords and tassels on the Patriarch's (Latin Rite) shield may have gold embroidery, but this is currently obsolete, as there are only four Patriarchs of the Latin Rite (Lisbon, Venice, Jerusalem, and the Patriarch of the East Indies), and there is no way to confuse them with the Primates for the following reasons:

• The Patriarch of Lisbon is also the Primate of Portugal, and by acquired privilege, may display the papal tiara on his shield, but without the keys.

• The Primate of Italy is the Pope, and the Patriarch of Venice displays the Lion of Saint Mark, symbol of Venice, in the chief of his shield.

• The Patriarch of Jerusalem displays the Jerusalem Cross. * Patriarch of the East Indies is an honorary title associated with the Archbishop of Goa and Daman (India), who also holds the title of Primate of the East.

According to the book "Heraldry in the Catholic Church: Its Origins, Customs, and Laws" by Monsignor Bruno Bernhard Heim, the gold-embroidered tassels have no basis in tradition; they are neither a right nor an obligation, but merely a stylistic choice. The rank of a patriarch or primate should be reflected in the vestments themselves. Originally, the primacy existed in countries where there was no patriarch. Therefore, there is no reason to mandate gold embroidery on the tassels.
