'''Okies''' var en amerikansk betegnelse på en gruppe økonomiske internflyktninger som dro fra [[Oklahoma]] til [[California]] i 1930-årene. De dro fra hjemstaten på grunn av den økologiske katastrofen ''[[Dust Bowl]]'' som sammen med [[den store depresjonen]] i landet gjorde levekårene svært vanskelige. Veien mot vest var fortrinnsvis [[route 66]]. Om lag 15 % av Oklahomas befolkning brøt opp. <br />

I California måtte de konkurrere med mange nyankomne fattige latinamerikanere og filippinere om daglønnet arbeid i landbruk og landbruksindustri. <br />

Selve uttrykket ''Okie'' om folk fra Oklahoma kan imidlertid spores i bruk allerede fra 1907, men da uten de sosiale konnotasjoner ordet fikk senere. Uttrykket ''Okie'' er noen tiår etter depresjonen var over atter blitt et nøytralt uttrykk på engelsk for folk fra Oklahoma.<br />
