Private koder er koder som kan brukes fritt av brukere som har behov for å angi flere navn på land, områder eller geografiske enheter i deres applikasjon av ISO 3166-1, og ISO 3166/MA vil aldri bruke disse kodene ved oppdatering av standarden. == Slettede koder ==
Når land slår seg sammen, deles opp eller endrer territorium blir deres numeriske koder sletta og de får nye koder. For eksempel:
* [[Øst-Tyskland]] og [[Vest-Tyskland]] brukte de numeriske kodene {{mono|278}} og {{mono|280}} respektivt før de ble slått sammen i 1990. Siden da har [[Tyskland]] hatt den numeriske koden {{mono|276}}, men beholdt de alfabetiske kodene for Vest-Tyskland.
* [[Etiopia]] brukte den numeriske koden {{mono|230}} før [[Eritrea]] ble selvstendig i 1993. Siden da har Etiopia hatt den numeriske koden {{mono|231}}, men beholdt samme alfabetiske koder.

Om et land endrer navn uten å endre territorium vil den numeriske koden forbli den samme. For eksempel, da [[Burma]] endra navn til [[Myanmar]] uten territorieendringer i 1989, ble de alfabetiske kodene endra, men den numeriske koden {{mono|104}} har forblitt den samme.
