== Historie ==

Verdens arkitekturfestival ble arrangert første gang i 2008 som ''en festival og prisutdelingskonkurranse dedisert til å feire og dele fremragende arkitektur over hele kloden''.<ref>Oversatt fra engelsk: ''«festival and live awards competition dedicated to celebrating and sharing architectural excellence from across the globe.»''</ref> De første fire årene ble festivalen arrangert i Barcelona og fra 2012 i Singapore. Flere hundre prosjekter blir meldt på i konkurransen om prisene og mer enn 200 av disse blir nominert til å bli personlig presentert på festivalen. Alle prosjektene blir samlet i ''World Buildings Directory''. Arkitektene betaler en deltageravgift for å melde på et prosjekt til konkurransen og må reise til det stedet hvor festivalen er arrangert for å presentere prosjektet personlig hvis det blir nominert. Påmelding er frivillig og festivalen kontrollerer ikke hvem som melder seg på. I 2011 ble ''Inside Festival'' (for interiørarkitektur og design) lagt til og arrangert samtidig som WAF.

Verdens arkitekturfestival ble første gang arrangert 22.-24. oktober 2008 i [[Barcelona]]. Direktør for programmet var [[Paul Finch]]. En vesentlig del av festivalen var programmet for presentasjon av de nominerte og utdeling av priser. Konkurransen var åpen for bygninger fullført de siste 18 måneder (mellom 1. januar 2007 og 20. juni 2008). 722 prosjekt konkurrerte i 17 kategorier og bestod av 96 bygningstyper fra 63 forskjellige land. Etter en forhåndsvurdering ble 224 prosjekt fra 43 land ble nominert. De nominerte prosjektene ble presentert av arkitektene under festivalen og kategorivinnerne konkurrerte om topprisen, ''Årets bygning'' (''World Building of the Year''). Dommerpanelet ble ledet av Norman Foster og blant de 40 arkitektene i panelet var [[Stefan Behnisch]], [[Robert Stern]] og [[Zaha Hadid]]. 1900 besøkende fra 70 land deltok på festivalen.

Den andre Verdens arkitekturfestival ble arrangert i [[Barcelona]] i ''Centre Convencions International Barcelona (CCIB)'' 4.-6. november 2009. Det deltok prosjekter fra 67 land og 272 prosjekt ble nominert i 15 kategorier. En jury med arkitekter og kjente personer fra industrien fra hele verden bedømte konkurransens 45 priser. Vinnerne i de 15 kategoriene for fullførte bygninger kunkurrerte om prisen ''Årets bygning''. I tillegg til kategoriene fra 2008 kom avdelingene Interiors and Fit-out, Structural Design and Future Projects. I 2009 kom 1507 arkitekter fra 71 land til Barcelona for å delta i festivalen.

Verdens arkitekturfestival ble arrangert for tredje gang i [[Barcelona]] i CCIB Forum (Centro de Convenciones Internacionales de Barcelona) 3.-5. november 2010. Festivalen var den største og mest omfattende i sitt slag i 2010. Mer enn 500 prosjekt fra 65 land konkurrerte i de 15 hovedkategoriene og de over 20 andre kategoriene. Festivalen delte ut 5 priser, 42 kategorivinnere for mer enn 100 bygningstyper. Konkurransen var åpen for påmelding av prosjekter fra 2. april til 9. juli og listen over de nominerte ble offentliggjort i slutten av august. De nominerte prosjektene ble presentert på festivalen.

Den fjerde arkitekturfestivalen ble arrangert i [[Barcelona]] 2.-4. november 2011 i ''Centre de Convencions Internacional de Catalunya''. Over 700 prosjekt hadde meldt seg på og over 1300 mennesker var tilstede ved prisutdelingsseremonien. Konkurransen åpnet for påmelding 1. april og stengte 30. juni 2011. I 2011 var blant annet [[Michael Sorkin]], [[Ben van Berkel]], [[Jo Noero]], [[Odile Decq]] og professor [[Kongjian Yu]], og [[Tim MacFarlane]] jurymedlemmer. Festivalen ble åpnet i ''Media-ICT'' (Cloud 9) og bygningen vant senere prisen ''Årets bygning''. ''Årets bygning'' ble valgt blant 16 kategorivinnere.
