'''[[VM i fotball 1958]]''' ble igjen arrangert i [[Europa]], denne gang i [[Sverige]]. {{f|Brasil}} vant mesterskapet etter å ha slått {{f|Sverige}} 5-2 i finalen. Verdensmesterskapet ble det store gjennombruddet for superstjernen [[Pelé]], som med tiden skulle bli betraktet som verdens beste fotballspiller gjennom alle tider. Dette ble det første VM i fotball hvor vinneren kom fra et annet kontinent enn arrangørlandet.

For første gang deltok {{f|Sovjetunionen}} i VM, og alle de [[Storbritannia|britiske]] nasjonene ({{f|England}}, {{f|Skottland}}, {{f|Wales}} og {{f|Nord-Irland}}). Turneringsformatet ble endret fra [[VM i fotball 1954|1954]]: Det var fremdeles seksten lag som spilte i fire kvalifiseringsgrupper, men denne gangen spilte alle lagene i gruppen mot hverandre, uten ekstraomganger ved uavgjort resultat. Hvis to lag hadde like mange poeng, skulle ikke målforskjellen, det skulle i stedet spilles omkamper for å avgjøre hvilke lag som gikk videre til kvartfinalene.

I Gruppe 4 spilte ikke Pelé før i den siste av Brasils gruppekamper, mot Sovjetunionen. Han noterte seg ikke på scoringslisten, men Brasil vant 2-0, og vant gruppen med to poeng. I denne gruppen ble det spilt omkamp mellom Sovjetunionen og England, og Anatolij Iljins mål i det 67. minutt sendte England ut av VM. 

Det måtte også spilles omkamper i gruppe 1 (Nord-Irland slo {{f|Tsjekkoslovakia}} og gikk sammen med {{f|Tyskland|Vest-Tyskland}} til kvartfinalene) og i Gruppe 3 (Wales slo {{f|Ungarn}}, og gikk videre sammen med Sverige). 

{{f|Frankrike}} vant Gruppe 2, ikke minst på grunn av [[Just Fontaine]]s farlige skuddfot. Han scoret seks mål på de tre første kampene. Jugoslavia sikret seg andreplassen i gruppen.

I kvartfinalene fortsatte Just Fontaine scoringsshowet med to nye mål da Frankrike slo ut Nord-Irland. Vest-Tysklands [[Helmut Rahn]] sikret tysk avansement med kampens eneste mål mot {{f|Jugoslavia}}, mens Sverige sendte Sovjetunionens lag hjem. I den siste kvartfinalen scoret Pelé kampens eneste mål mot Wales.

I semifinalen imponerte svenskene igjen ved å beseire Vest-Tyskland med 3-1. Fontaine puttet på enda et mål i Frankrikes kamp mot Brasil, men det var ikke nok til å stoppe Brasil. Med hat trick av Pelé vant Brasil hele 5-2. I bronsefinalen scoret Fontaine ytterligere fire mål da Frankrike slo Vest-Tyskland 6-3. Dermed hadde Fontaine scoret 13 mål i løpet av VM-turneringen, en rekord som fremdeles står.

Finalen ble spilt på [[Råsunda stadion]] i [[Solna]]. 50&nbsp;000 tilskuere var vitne til at Sverige tok ledelsen allerede etter fire minutter. Brasilianerne kom sterkt tilbake, og Vava scoret to mål før pausen. I andre omgang var Pelé den store stjernen med to nye mål. Sluttresultatet ble 5-2 til Brasil, som for første gang kunne reise hjem med [[Jules Rimet-pokalen]].
