Melittus var fra [[Roma]], og ifølge [[Beda den ærverdige]] var han fra en fornem familie.

=== Misjonæt===
[[Augustin av Canterbury]] sendte etter en tid i England [[Laurentius av Canterbury|Canterbury]] til Roma for å rapportere til pave [[Gregor I den store|Gregor den store]], og ba samtidig om å få sendt flere misjonærer. Melittus, som da var [[abbed]] i et [[benediktinerne|benediktinerkloster]] var blant de utvalgte som ble sendt, og fikk med seg [[pallium|palliet]], tegnet på erkebispeverdighet, til Augustin. Han hadde også med seg bøker og annet som trengtes i kirken i England.

I [[604]] ble han [[ordinasjon|bispeviet]] av Augustin, og ble den første biskopen av London. Ca. [[616]] ble han drevet ut av London av sønnene til kong [[Saebert av Essex]], som var hedninger. De hadde krevd å få motta [[nattverd]] uten å la seg [[dåp|døpe]] først, noe Melittus ikke gikk med på. Han flyktet til [[Gallia]], men ble kalt tilbake av Laurentius.

Etter dennes død i [[619]] ble Melittus utnevnt til erkebiskop av Canterbury.

Beda forteller at han gjennom bønn reddet en kirke i Canterbury fra å bli flammenes rov, noe som har gitt opphav til at han ofte avbildes i bønn ved en brennende by.

Han døde i Canterbury 24. april 624, og ble gravlagt ved siden av Augustin i klosterkirken St. Peter og Paulus. Etter sin død ble han regnet som [[helgen]].
