Johnny Cash vokste opp under den amerikanske [[den store depresjonen|depresjonen]] på [[1930-årene|trettitallet]], og fikk nærkontakt med jorden og naturen gjennom lange dager på [[bomull]]smarkene og på gården. Han hadde et anstrengt forhold til sin strenge far, som til en viss grad kan ha klandret Johnny for at Johnnys bror og forbilde omkom i en ulykke på et sagbruk. Til gjengjeld hadde moren stor tro på Johnny, og var den første som oppdaget hans musikalitet, som hun kalte «gaven». Han lærte mye musikk gjennom salmer, og troen ble en viktig del av hele hans liv. Johnny begynte ikke å spille gitar før han var nærmere tyve år, stasjonert i [[militærvesen|militæret]] i [[Vest-Tyskland]]. Da han skulle ta sangtimer ble han sendt hjem etter tre øvelser med beskjed om å aldri la noen få forandre det spesielle uttrykket hans – en grov og ru baryton, upolert og firkantet, langt unna de glatte og velproduserte stemmene til mange av tidens populære musikere.

Cash begynte karrieren på det som skulle bli legendariske [[Sun Studio]]s. Singelen «Folsom Prison Blues» ble berømt for linjene «I shot a man in Reno/Just to watch him die». I likhet med mange av sine samtidige artister hadde Johnny Cash et nært forhold til gospel, og sang religiøse sanger gjennom hele karrieren. Denne siden ble imidlertid tonet ned, fordi plateselskapet var redd for at det ville ha en negativ effekt på populariteten hans. Han insisterte likevel på å gi sin [[tiende]] tilbake til [[Gud]], og derfor finner man minst én [[kristendom|kristen]] sang på de fleste albumene hans.

Karrieren skjøt raskt fart, med et påfølgende hektisk turnéliv med blant annet [[Carl Perkins]], [[Elvis Presley]], [[Roy Orbison]], [[Waylon Jennings]] og [[Jerry Lee Lewis]]. Cash ble snart avhengig av [[amfetamin]], et vanlig rusmiddel blant artister som levde under stort press. På femtitallet hadde man enda ikke oversikt over stoffets langtidsvirkninger, og man fikk amfetamin på resept. Alkohol ble en like viktig ingrediens, noe som førte til en rekke ulykker og skandaler. Cash innså etter hvert at han var avhengig, og [[June Carter Cash|June Carter]] har en stor del av æren for at han greide å rehabiliteres før han gikk under, ettersom de fleste andre rundt ham var i ferd med, eller hadde gitt ham opp.

Allerede som gutt var Cash fascinert av [[The Carter Family]], som han hørte på radio, og da spesielt June Carter, senere June Carter Cash. Hun ble med Cash på hans omreisende show og det utviklet seg en hemmelig kjærlighet – på den tiden var begge gift på hver sin kant, Johnny Cash med Vivian Liberto og June Carter med Carl Smith, men begge ble skilt. De to hadde stor innflytelse på hverandre, også musikalsk, ettersom også June var en meget god musiker og vokalist. Hun spilte harpe og skrev blant annet Johnnys kanskje største hit "Ring of Fire", sammen med Merle Kilgore. I 1968, etter mange år og gjentatte frierier sa June til slutt ja, på scenen, foran en fullsatt sal.

I 1970 fikk Johnny og June sin eneste sønn, John Carter Cash, og de brukte resten av livet på å spille musikk og underholde på turné.

I sin andre selvbiografi, ''Cash'' ([[1997]]), som på enkelte punkter motsier hans første, ''Man in Black'' ([[1975]]), sier han at det er vanskelig å huske hva som er sant og hva som er legende – for ham handler det om grader av ærlighet.

En av de siste låtene Johnny spilte inn var en versjon av Nine Inch Nails «Hurt», ett år før han sovnet stille inn i 2003.

Cash var kjent for sin sorte klesdrakt, og skrev en egen sang om den, «The Man In Black». Der sier han at han gikk i sort i solidaritet med de utslåtte i samfunnet.{{tr}}

Cash ble kjent som countryartist på femtitallet og hadde sin første storhetstid på sekstitallet. Året [[The Beatles]] turnerte i USA{{når}} solgte Cash flere plater og trakk flere til konsertene.{{tr}}

Johnny Cash var blant annet kjent for sine konserter i amerikanske fengsler. Den mest berømte konserten holdt han i [[Folsom Prison]] i [[1968]], og innspillingen ble en av hans definitive bestselgere.

Han fikk sitt eget program hos tv-kanalen [[American Broadcasting Company|ABC]] som het ''The Johnny Cash Show''. Det gikk mellom [[1969]] og [[1971]], og hadde gjester som [[Bob Dylan]], [[Neil Young]], [[Joni Mitchell]], George Jones og [[The Monkees]]. Programmet var populært den første sesongen, på grunn av fengselsalbumene og Cashs suksess med singelen «A Boy Named Sue». Programmet inneholdt også en historiedel, ''Ride This Train'', hvor Cash tok toget til historiske steder i USA og fortalte hva som hadde skjedd der. Programmet ble tatt av sendeplanen i 1971 på grunn av dalende seertall.

I [[1983]] skulle han bli rusmiddelavhengig igjen, denne gangen av smertestillende piller i kjølvannet av en operasjon. I [[1985]] gjorde han seg bemerket med gruppa [[The Highwaymen]] bestående av Cash selv, [[Kris Kristofferson]], [[Willie Nelson]] og [[Waylon Jennings]]. Da var Cashs egen karriere i enda en bølgedal. Han var uenig med plateselskapet, og de trodde heller ikke på ham som salgsvare, og ønsket ikke å fornye kontrakten hans. Rick Rubin lot Cash få bestemme helt selv hva han ville spille. Etter tre dager og flere hundre sanger spilt inn i Rubins stue, med bare Cash og en kassegitar, ble ''American Recordings'' gitt ut i 1994.

Cash gjorde en gjesteopptreden på [[U2]]s album ''Zooropa'' i [[1993]], der han sang «The Wanderer». Han hadde alltid sunget både egne og andres sanger, men i denne siste perioden var det en rekke coverlåter som etter fem tiår som aktiv artist kom til å introdusere ham for et annet og langt yngre publikum, deriblant [[Depeche Mode]]s «Personal Jesus» og [[Trent Reznor]]s ([[Nine Inch Nails]]) «Hurt». Videoen til «Hurt» ble nominert i syv kategorier i [[2003]] [[MTV Video Music Awards]]. Da var Cash 70 år gammel.

I [[2005]] kom filmen [[Walk the Line]] som fortalte om Cashs liv fram til konserten i Folsomfengselet i [[1968]]. [[Joaquin Phoenix]] spilte Johnny Cash og [[Reese Witherspoon]] hadde rollen som June Carter.
