==Gruppespill==
Gruppespillet ble kjent for få uavgjortresultater og et stort antall scoret mål. Det første uavgjortresultatet kom ikke før den trettende kampen i turneringen mellom Iran og Nigeria, noe som var rekord siden VM i 1930. Etter kampslutt 20. juni (ca. midt i gruppespillet), var målsnittet på 2,92 mål per kamp, over 28 % høyere enn 2010-VM, og det høyeste siden 1970. 

Det var stor dominans av lag fra de amerikanske kontinentene. Enkelte pekte på varmen som faktor, andre på «hjemmefordelen» (første VM på et amerikansk kontinent siden USA 1994; i Latin-Amerika siden Mexico 1986; i Sør-Amerika siden Argentina 1978) hvor lag som Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Costa Rica og Mexico fikk massiv støtte på tribunen, men uansett gikk 8 av 10 lag fra de amerikanske kontinentene videre. Spesielt ble det ansett som svært overraskende at Costa Rica vant, og USA tok 2.-plass, i hver sin «dødens gruppe». Asia på sin side gjorde det dårlig, med bare tre poeng på 12 kamper, ingen seire, og sist i alle sine grupper.

Etter kampdag 2, var seks lag allerede klare for cupspillet etter å ha vunnet begge sine kamper: Nederland, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Argentina og Belgia. Samtidig hadde også store nasjoner røket ut: Spania – regjerende VM- og EM-vinner – var ute etter to strake tap, noe som ble ansett som et sjokk – aldri tidligere hadde regjerende verdensmester startet VM med to tap. Vinnere fra 1966, England, var også ute etter to tap, dette var første gang siden 1958 at England røk ut i gruppespillet. Kamerun, Australia, og Bosnia-Hercegovina var også ute etter to strake tap.

Etter kampdag 3 var nok en tidligere verdensmester slått ut: Italia røk etter å ha scoret kun to mål i turneringen, det minste et italiensk lag hadde scoret siden VM 1966. Hellas kvalifiserte seg for første gang til sluttspillet, mens Costa Rica gikk videre til sluttspillet fra en gruppe med tre nasjoner som hadde vunnet trofeet tidligere. Med unntak av Ecuador, gikk alle lagene fra Sør-Amerika videre, og for første gang gikk tre lag fra Nord-Amerika videre. Det fjerde laget fra Nord-Amerika, Honduras, ble derimot med 3 strake tap VMs dårligste lag sammen med Kamerun.

===Oppsett===
I gruppespillet blir de 32 lagene delt inn i 8 grupper á 4 lag i hver gruppe. Hver gruppe konkurrerer da i [[round robin]], der lagene som avslutter på første- og andreplass i hver gruppe går videre til sluttspillet.
